Israel Strikes Iran Petrochemical Plant

(MENAFN) An Israeli airstrike struck a major petrochemical facility in Mahshahr, southwestern Iran on Monday, partially damaging the industrial complex, Iranian officials confirmed — as the region braced for further escalation.

Valiollah Hayati, deputy governor for security affairs in Khuzestan province, addressed reporters in the immediate aftermath of the strike. According to a news agency, Hayati stated: "A few minutes ago, the Karun Mahshahr Petrochemical Company was attacked by the Zionist enemy, and part of this industrial complex was damaged as a result of the projectiles hitting it."

Hayati confirmed no fatalities or injuries had been recorded at the time, while cautioning that a fuller assessment was still underway. He added: "Further details about the extent of damage as well as possible casualties will be announced."

In the immediate wake of the strike, the Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Economic Zone Organization ordered an emergency evacuation of all day-shift personnel from the site, an Iranian news agency reported.

The Israeli army subsequently confirmed the operation, stating that its air force had struck multiple targets within the petrochemical complex, with further details to follow.

Monday's strike came amid a sharp regional escalation. Iran launched missiles toward northern Israel late Sunday — its first such bombardment since a fragile ceasefire in April — in response to Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs earlier that day. Those strikes claimed at least two lives and left 11 others wounded.
