Gaza Hospital Director Is Held in Solitary Confinement Under Harsh Conditions
(MENAFN) A Palestinian lawyer has said that Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, is being held in solitary confinement under harsh conditions inside an Israeli prison.
According to the lawyer, Nasser Odeh, Abu Safiya is suffering from multiple chronic illnesses and requires regular medication and medical care, which he has allegedly been denied in recent weeks. He added that communication with the detained doctor remains extremely limited, with no reliable updates on his current condition.
The lawyer said he last visited Abu Safiya on May 26, noting that he was later transferred on June 3 to solitary confinement at Nafha Prison in southern Israel.
He also claimed that during the visit, Abu Safiya appeared in restraints, describing him as “handcuffed and shackled.” The meeting, he said, took place in a controlled environment under camera surveillance, where conversations were conducted via telephone through a glass barrier while guards were present nearby.
Abu Safiya was detained in late 2024 during a military raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, amid the ongoing conflict in the territory.
According to the lawyer’s account, conditions of detention have further deteriorated since his transfer to solitary confinement, raising concerns over his health and access to treatment.
