US Signals Near-Deal with Iran While Warning of Military Readiness

(MENAFN) Pete Hegseth said Sunday that a major agreement with Iran appears close, while stressing that the United States is still prepared to take action if diplomatic efforts fail.

Speaking to reporters after leaving Paris, where he attended D-Day commemorations, Hegseth said Washington’s priority remains preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

“We are prepared ... to do what needs to be done to ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon,” he stated.

He added that President Donald Trump is committed to reaching a diplomatic solution aimed at blocking Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

Hegseth also warned that the United States is monitoring maritime security in the region, saying any attacks on shipping would be met with a response. He noted that commercial traffic continues to move through key waterways despite rising tensions.

“Ultimately, we think a deal, a great deal. It's likely coming soon,” he said, suggesting negotiations may be nearing a conclusion.

Separately, he confirmed that a review of the 2021 US withdrawal from Afghanistan is in its final stages, with preliminary findings expected to be released soon.
