Trump Commends Syria’s New Leadership, Signals Support for Regional Role
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has expressed support for Syria’s current leadership, saying the country is making notable progress in restoring order under President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
Speaking in an interview aired on Sunday, Trump said, “Syria is doing a very good job of cleaning up their act.”
He also praised al-Sharaa, who assumed power after the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, describing him as a "very good leader" and suggesting that he could contribute to broader regional security initiatives.
Trump indicated that Syria could potentially assist efforts aimed at conducting more "surgical" strikes against Hezbollah, adding that he hopes to see improved conditions and a "better life" for the people of Lebanon. Syrian authorities did not immediately respond to the remarks.
The comments come after Washington eased several sanctions targeting Syria, including the Caesar Act, as part of efforts to support reconstruction and recovery under the country’s new administration.
Trump also addressed his relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying the two leaders are getting along "very well" despite recent differences regarding developments in Lebanon.
The US president had previously voiced frustration over Netanyahu’s approach, stating that he was “perturbed” by the Israeli leader’s position of "constantly fighting" with Lebanon.
