Strait of Hormuz Shipping Drops Sharply Amid Regional Conflict

(MENAFN) The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors, has experienced a dramatic decline in shipping activity during the first 100 days of the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

According to reports, fewer than 1,000 vessels have passed through the waterway since the outbreak of hostilities, a volume that would typically be recorded in roughly a single week under normal operating conditions.

Located at the entrance to the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical link between energy-producing nations in the Middle East and international markets, connecting the region to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Before the conflict began on Feb. 28, the passage played a vital role in transporting oil and liquefied natural gas to destinations around the world.

Prior to the escalation, the route was responsible for facilitating around one-fifth of global daily oil consumption and a significant share of international LNG shipments. It also served as a major artery for global fertilizer exports, carrying roughly one-third of seaborne fertilizer trade.

As the conflict reached its 100th day on June 7, commercial shipping through the chokepoint remained severely restricted, according to reports.

Vessel operators seeking passage have largely relied on negotiations or financial arrangements with Iranian authorities to secure transit through the area.

Reports also indicate that some ships have moved through the strait with their Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking devices switched off. During the conflict, a new maritime corridor reportedly emerged within Iranian territorial waters, while other vessels continued to use the route traditionally designated by international maritime authorities.
