Iran Fires 10 Ballistic Missiles at Israel

(MENAFN) Iran launched a sweeping missile assault on northern Israel late Sunday, shattering weeks of fragile calm in the first such bombardment since an April ceasefire — a direct response to renewed Israeli strikes on Beirut that have pushed the region to the brink of full-scale conflict.

Iran's state broadcaster confirmed the strikes, warning attacks will continue "if Israel responds to Iranian attacks or does not stop its attacks on Lebanon."

Hebrew media reported three successive waves of missiles targeting Israel, while an Israeli public broadcaster confirmed the attack comprised a total of 10 ballistic missiles, including a salvo of four projectiles. Initial reports pointed to damage in the Israeli city of Tiberias, as authorities simultaneously suspended operations at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv.

The Israeli army initially reported its air defense systems were actively intercepting the incoming missiles, before later claiming all projectiles had been successfully shot down. A correspondent on the ground reported hearing explosions over both Haifa and Nazareth as interceptions took place.

The broadcaster further reported nationwide class cancellations and cited Israeli officials confirming Tel Aviv's intention to retaliate. Media added that an Israeli woman sustained moderate injuries while rushing to a protected shelter during the barrage, with an unnamed Israeli official telling the broadcaster there was "no chance" Israel would refrain from retaliating.

The missile strikes came hours after an Israeli airstrike on Beirut's southern suburbs claimed at least two lives and left 11 wounded — the third such Israeli attack on the area since the April 17 ceasefire took effect, following previous strikes on May 6 and May 28.
