Four Suspects Named in in Gulf of Finland Cable Damage

(MENAFN) Four individuals have been identified as suspects in connection with damage to undersea telecommunications cables in the Gulf of Finland in late 2025, following the conclusion of a preliminary investigation, a Finnish broadcaster reported Friday.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed it had wrapped up its preliminary inquiry into the damage to two telecommunications cables and named four suspects in relation to the incident. Three of the four remain subject to travel bans. The case will now advance to prosecutorial consideration.

According to the broadcaster, investigators pursued the case on suspicion of aggravated vandalism, attempted aggravated vandalism, and aggravated interference with telecommunications.

The investigation stems from an incident in late 2025, when Finnish authorities seized a vessel suspected of severing an undersea telecommunications cable in the Gulf of Finland and detained 14 crew members. Police identified the vessel as the Fitburg, stating at the time that its movements were suspected to be directly linked to the damage.

The case is among several high-profile incidents of suspected undersea infrastructure sabotage in the Baltic Sea region in recent years, drawing heightened scrutiny from Nordic and European security officials over the vulnerability of critical submarine cable networks.
