Bolivia Appoints New Defense Minister Amid Ongoing Protests, Blockades
(MENAFN) Bolivia has appointed Ernesto Justiniano as its new defense minister as the country continues to experience widespread unrest, according to reports.
Justiniano assumed office on Wednesday in the presence of Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz Pereira, who said the new minister’s responsibilities will focus on restoring stability, strengthening the armed forces, and safeguarding democratic order.
The appointment comes as protests and road blockades persist across the country, with local media reporting that the disruption has lasted for more than a month. More than 100 blockade points remain active nationwide, affecting transport of goods, public movement, and placing additional strain on the economy.
Justiniano described the situation as exceptional, saying Bolivia must urgently restore basic conditions for the functioning of the state.
He also emphasized that the government will continue to maintain open channels for dialogue, while stressing that no demand justifies paralyzing the country or endangering public safety.
