SPD Lawmakers Urge Stronger German Criticism of Israel’s Actions in Mideast

(MENAFN) Several lawmakers from Germany’s co-ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) have called on their party leadership to take a tougher stance on Israel over its actions in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, according to reports.

SPD foreign policy spokesperson for the Bundestag parliamentary group Adis Ahmetovic said Israel is responsible for large-scale casualties in Gaza, what he described as a “ruthless settlement policy” in the West Bank, and severe humanitarian suffering in Lebanon.

“As the SPD, we must clearly call out these ongoing violations of international law if we do not want to be accused of applying double standards,” he added.

Another SPD lawmaker, Isabel Cademartori, also urged clearer positioning from the party on the Middle East conflict.

Addressing party leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas, she said: “I have long wanted the party leadership to clearly state that Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip violate international law and to act accordingly.”
