UNIFIL Reports Peacekeeper Killed, Two Wounded in S. Lebanon
(MENAFN) A member of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed and two fellow peacekeepers were injured after mortar fire struck their location in southern Lebanon, according to a statement released by the mission on Thursday.
UNIFIL said the peacekeeper suffered severe injuries late Wednesday after “when mortar shells struck his position near Marjayoun, southeastern Lebanon.”
The injured soldier was airlifted to a hospital in Beirut for emergency treatment but later succumbed to his wounds.
The mission added that two additional peacekeepers were wounded in the same incident and are currently receiving medical care at a facility within a UNIFIL base.
Officials said an investigation has been opened “to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to this tragic incident.”
Expressing concern over the security situation, the mission noted: “UNIFIL has detected an increasingly high number of trajectories and impacts in South Lebanon. The violence must end.”
