China Criticizes US Remarks on Tiananmen Anniversary
(MENAFN) China on Thursday rejected recent comments from the United States regarding the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, calling on Washington to refrain from interfering in its domestic matters and promoting ideological divisions.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, "We urge the US side to act on the commitment of respecting China and Chinese people, stop inciting ideological confrontation and stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of democracy and human rights."
Her comments followed a statement issued by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday to mark the 37th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.
"No amount of censorship can erase the past. Those who sacrificed to uphold their unalienable rights of free expression and peaceful assembly will be vindicated someday," Rubio said.
According to official Chinese statements, Beijing maintains that it reached a definitive assessment of the events that took place in the late 1980s, which Mao referred to as a "political disturbance."
She also dismissed the US position as inaccurate, arguing that it misrepresents historical events, attacks China's political framework and development model, and constitutes interference in the country's internal affairs. Mao further conveyed Beijing's "strong deplorement and firm opposition."
