Amnesty Warns of Violations of Protest Rights in Greece
(MENAFN) Amnesty International has raised concerns over the treatment of protesters in Greece, saying the country is failing to protect the right to peaceful assembly, according to reports.
Amnesty International stated that the right to peaceful protest in Greece is being “blatantly violated both in law and in practice,” citing what it described as problematic policing of demonstrations.
“The right to freedom of peaceful assembly in Greece is being blatantly violated both in law and in practice,” said Kondylia Gogou, Amnesty International’s regional researcher for Europe.
The comments came alongside a report accusing Greek police of using excessive or unnecessary force during protests, including against journalists, resulting in both physical and psychological harm.
“The footage and testimonies we have documented reveal a pattern of dangerous deployment of stun grenades and misuse of batons and other less-lethal weapons that have caused a range of injuries, with journalists also in the firing line,” Gogou said.
She added that the alleged practices, combined with a lack of accountability for police actions, are discouraging people from exercising their right to protest and creating a broader chilling effect on public demonstrations.
