Kuwait Expels Two Iranian Diplomats After Strikes

(MENAFN) Kuwait has declared two Iranian diplomats "persona non grata" and ordered them to vacate its territory within 24 hours, following Iranian drone and ballistic missile strikes that struck Kuwaiti soil and damaged a terminal at its international airport.

In a statement posted on X, Kuwait's Foreign Ministry said Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Hamad Suleiman Al-Mishaan summoned Hamid Hamid Yaqoubi Far, the acting chargé d'affaires of the Iranian Embassy in Kuwait, to receive a formal protest note — which also included a decision to reduce Iranian embassy staffing levels.

Al-Mishaan delivered an unambiguous condemnation of the attacks, reiterating Kuwait's "rejection of the use of its territory or airspace for any hostile acts against any state."

The deputy foreign minister went further, dismissing Tehran's justifications outright. "He also emphasized that Iran's false claims are baseless and unsupported by any evidence, and that the repetition of such allegations cannot in any way justify the attacks on Kuwait's territory and civilian and vital infrastructure," the ministry statement read.

Al-Mishaan also served notice that Kuwait reserves a "full and inherent right to defend itself and to take all necessary measures to preserve its sovereignty and safeguard its security."

Kuwaiti authorities confirmed the strikes killed one person, wounded 63 others, and caused significant damage to critical infrastructure, including diplomatic missions. a state-run news agency reported that Prime Minister Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah visited the stricken airport in the aftermath of the assault.

The attack is the latest flashpoint in a region that has been on edge since late February, when US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran killed more than 3,000 people — among them then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and numerous senior military and government figures. A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire came into force on April 8, though efforts toward a comprehensive settlement remain ongoing.

In an interview aired Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons, adding that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is actively engaged in negotiations with Washington.
