UN Chief Warns Over Us–Iran Exchange of Fire, Regional Escalation
(MENAFN) The UN Secretary-General has expressed concern over reports of an overnight exchange of fire between the United States and Iran, as well as claims that Iran targeted Kuwait and Bahrain, according to his spokesperson on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said António Guterres is “alarmed by the reported exchange of fire overnight between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and also by reports that the Islamic Republic of Iran has targeted Kuwait and Bahrain.”
He added that the UN chief is “deeply troubled by the reports of civilian casualties” and is calling on all parties to avoid further escalation.
Guterres urged “maximum restraint” and warned against actions that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Dujarric also stressed that the UN chief “condemns all attacks on civilian infrastructure” and emphasized that international humanitarian law “strictly prohibits the targeting of civilian objects.”
He further reiterated support for mediation efforts, saying Guterres “reaffirms his full support for all ongoing mediation efforts, including those led by Pakistan, and urges all parties to engage constructively and in good faith with diplomatic initiatives.”
The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions following recent military developments involving the US and Iran, which have raised concerns about broader escalation across the region.
