Iraq Launches Historic Push to Bring All Weapons Under State Control

(MENAFN) Iraq has taken a significant step toward consolidating its security architecture, with a newly formed military committee launching operations to place all weapons exclusively under state authority, military spokesman Sabah al-Nu'man announced Wednesday.

"The committee, formed under the directive of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi), has begun its work to place weapons under state control," al-Nu'man told a news agency, as cited by another state news agency.

The committee's mandate is sweeping in scope, tasked with engineering a comprehensive transfer of military assets and personnel into the formal state security apparatus.

"The committee will establish mechanisms for the integration of the relevant formations and for transferring weapons, equipment, and military camps to the Iraqi security authorities," al-Nu'man said.

He stressed that the process would be conducted with careful attention to the welfare of affected personnel.

"The separation of formations from the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) includes restructuring these formations and safeguarding the rights of their members," he added.

The move represents a pivotal moment in Iraq's long-running effort to unify command over its fragmented security landscape. The PMF was originally established in 2014 as an emergency measure, created under a religious edict issued by top Shia cleric Ali al-Sistani to mobilize fighters against the ISIS (Daesh) terror group following its lightning seizure of large swaths of Iraqi territory. The umbrella organization was formally integrated into the Iraqi armed forces by a government decision in 2016, though questions over its operational independence and external loyalties have persisted ever since.
