Rubio Expresses Optimism Over Possible Israel-Lebanon Security Deal Talks
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday he is hopeful that ongoing discussions between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington could soon lead to a formal security framework and joint action plan.
He confirmed that delegations from both countries are holding a second consecutive day of meetings at the US State Department as part of US-mediated efforts to address regional security concerns.
“Hopefully, today we'll produce a joint statement and an action plan on a track for security in that country,” Rubio told the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Rubio said US assistance to Israel is being coordinated alongside support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, as Washington aims to strengthen Lebanon’s military capacity.
He emphasized that the broader objective is to build a Lebanese force with sufficient “strength and the capability to disarm Hezbollah and reclaim the entirety of the country.”
Describing Hezbollah as a destabilizing factor for both Lebanon and Israel, Rubio said the United States hopes to encourage cooperation between Beirut and Tel Aviv in addressing the group’s role.
“We are hopeful that we can create a paradigm in which Lebanon's government and Israel can work together to disarm Hezbollah and allow the people of Lebanon to reclaim its country,” he said.
