Royal Navy Helicopter Crash Kills Three During Training Exercise


(MENAFN) Three members of the Royal Navy lost their lives after a Merlin Mk4 helicopter went down during a training mission in Devon, southwestern England, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the Sourton Down area near Okehampton shortly after the incident. According to reports, authorities closed sections of the A386 and A30 while rescue and recovery teams operated at the crash site.

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: “It is with deep sadness that we can confirm three members of the Royal Navy have died during a helicopter training exercise. Our thoughts and sympathies are with their families and friends.”

The Royal Navy also confirmed that the aircraft involved was a Merlin Mk4 helicopter. First Sea Lord Gen. Sir Gwyn Jenkins described the tragedy as a significant loss for the naval community.

He said he was “deeply saddened” by the incident and noted that the crash would be “a huge shock” to the naval community. He also expressed gratitude to emergency personnel for their efforts at the scene.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday near military training grounds frequently used by helicopter crews operating around the edge of Dartmoor.
