Israeli Forces Shell Southern Syria, Push Into Daraa Province

(MENAFN) Israeli forces launched artillery strikes against areas in southern Syria and advanced into the western countryside of Daraa province late Wednesday, according to Syria's state news agency.

The news agency reported that Israeli troops fired artillery shells toward the outskirts of the village of Saisoun in western Daraa, as well as near the al-Mantara Dam area in Quneitra province, with two shells confirmed to have landed in the vicinity of Saisoun village.

The agency further reported that an Israeli force comprising three military vehicles pushed forward along Wadi al-Raqad Road in the Yarmouk Basin area, where soldiers opened machine-gun fire on agricultural fields planted with wheat and barley before ultimately withdrawing from the area.

Syrian authorities have yet to issue any official response to the shelling and ground incursion — actions that form part of what observers describe as Israel's near-daily violations of Syria's territorial sovereignty.

The encroachments follow a significant geopolitical shift: after the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024, Israel formally declared the 1974 Disengagement Agreement null and void and moved swiftly to occupy the buffer zone stretching along the shared frontier.

Despite the newly installed Syrian administration refraining from issuing any threats toward Israel, Israeli forces have continued to conduct airstrikes deep inside Syrian territory since Assad's ouster — operations that have killed civilians and systematically targeted military installations, equipment, and weapons stockpiles.
