US Defends Kenya Ebola Facility, Says It Poses No Risk to Communities
(MENAFN) The US Embassy in Kenya says an Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base intended for US personnel does not pose any risk to surrounding communities, as controversy over the project intensifies, according to reports.
The embassy says the facility is part of broader efforts to prevent Ebola’s spread and strengthen regional health security during the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The bio-isolation facility in Laikipia is part of a holistic response to prevent the spread of the disease and lessen health risks for the region as a whole; it does not pose risk to nearby communities,” the embassy says.
It adds that it is aware of a court case challenging the project and is working with Kenyan authorities to address public concerns and clarify its purpose.
The statement comes after Kenya’s High Court extends a suspension of the facility for three weeks and orders the government to release details of the agreement behind it, according to reports.
The legal challenge is filed by the Katiba Institute, which raises concerns over legality, transparency, and public health implications.
