Germany Remains Hopeful in Tight Race for UN Security Council Seat
(MENAFN) Germany says it remains hopeful of winning a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council despite strong competition from European allies, according to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.
He says, “We knew from the outset that this would be a tough competition, as we are up against two other strong candidates from Europe,” speaking ahead of the vote.
Wadephul adds, “Austria and Portugal are very close allies, which makes campaigning against them not entirely easy for us. But I remain confident that we will be able to secure the required number of votes.”
The UN General Assembly is set to vote later Wednesday on two seats for the “Western European and Others” group for the 2027–2028 term, with Germany needing a two-thirds majority to win a seat.
Diplomatic observers expect a close contest, with Germany’s bid supported by its influence in the EU, its commitment to multilateralism, and its role as a major contributor to UN aid and development funding.
