Iran Rejects US Trust as Trump Hardens Nuclear Deal Terms

(MENAFN) According to reports, Iran’s chief negotiator warned on Sunday that the United States cannot be trusted, stressing that Tehran would refuse to accept any agreement with Washington unless it guarantees what it considers the full protection of Iranian rights.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s remarks came after reports that US President Donald Trump had returned a revised and tougher peace proposal to Iran, further highlighting the ongoing gap between the two sides.

Analysts noted that any changes to the draft agreement could slow progress toward a potential deal aimed at formally ending the broader Middle East conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, amid prolonged negotiations marked by tensions, sharp exchanges, and intermittent escalations.

Iran had already been engaged in discussions with the United States over its nuclear programme earlier in February, when, according to reports, US and Israeli strikes targeted key sites and severely weakened elements of Iran’s senior leadership structure.

While Iran maintains that its nuclear activities are strictly for civilian purposes, the United States and several Western governments continue to suspect that the program may have military dimensions.

According to reports from The New York Times and Axios, Trump recently sent a more stringent framework back to Iran for consideration, although the details of the proposal have not been made public.

Trump has stated that his priorities include preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons and ensuring the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route that has been disrupted since the conflict began.

In a televised interview with Lara Trump on Fox News, he said: “The one guarantee that I have to have is that there will be no nuclear weapons. They've agreed to that, and it was very interesting,” according to the broadcast.

However, Iranian officials have repeatedly expressed skepticism about these claims, and major disagreements between the two sides remain unresolved.

In a video aired on state television, Ghalibaf said: “We will not approve any agreement until we are certain that the rights of the Iranian people have been upheld,” according to the statement.

According to the Tasnim news agency, discussions over the draft text are still ongoing, with both sides submitting revisions.

“No agreement has yet been finalised, and it is possible that any agreement will be rejected,” the agency reported.
