Albania Sees Growing Protests Over Kushner-Linked Tourism Project
(MENAFN) Public opposition to a major tourism project in Albania continued to grow as large demonstrations were held over plans to develop protected coastal areas into a luxury destination linked to a business venture associated with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
According to reports, thousands of people took to the streets of Tirana under the slogan “Albania is not for sale,” marching from the city's central square to the prime minister's office. Protesters voiced concerns about environmental protection and criticized plans that would allow large-scale construction in ecologically sensitive areas.
Demonstrators carried signs and banners demanding the preservation of protected land and opposing development projects within conservation zones.
The dispute focuses on a proposed tourism complex involving Sazan Island and sections of the Narta-Zvernec lagoon and wetland system near the coastal city of Vlora. Reports indicate that the development would transform the area into a high-end tourism destination.
According to reports, the project carries an estimated value of around $4 billion and would encompass roughly 618 acres within a protected coastal ecosystem.
The development is reportedly backed by the Albanian government and is being pursued through an investment firm linked to Jared Kushner.
Environmental organizations and local activists argue that the project could threaten one of Albania’s most environmentally significant coastal habitats. They have also expressed concerns about potential impacts on land and properties owned by members of the local Greek minority community.
As stated by reports, opposition to the project has intensified in recent weeks as campaigners call for stronger protections for the area's natural environment and greater scrutiny of development plans affecting protected land.
