New Zealand Bans 3 Israelis Over West Bank Settler Violence

(MENAFN) New Zealand has joined Australia and the European Union in imposing travel bans on three Israeli nationals accused of deploying violence to accelerate illegal settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, adding fresh momentum to mounting international pressure over intensifying attacks against Palestinians.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced Tuesday that the restrictions target individuals who had "actively worked to expand illegal settlements in the West Bank, including through violence," barring them from entering New Zealand.

Peters framed the move as a deliberate alignment with allied partners and a direct response to concerns that unchecked settler violence is eroding any remaining prospects for peace and stability in the region.

"These travel bans are targeted at three individuals who have actively worked to expand illegal settlements in the West Bank, including through violence," Peters said.

He was careful to draw a distinction between the targeted individuals and the broader Israeli population and government, stressing that the measures were directed solely at the three named persons.

The announcement arrives against a backdrop of sharpening global scrutiny over settler violence. UN experts have recently sounded the alarm that attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied territory have reached alarming levels, warning of a growing risk of forced displacement.

According to the experts, relentless assaults, systematic intimidation, destruction of property, and restrictions on land access are making it increasingly untenable for Palestinian communities to remain in their homes.

UN experts further cautioned that settler violence has taken on a systematic character across parts of the occupied West Bank, posing what they described as an "existential threat" to Palestinian communities and dramatically accelerating displacement pressures. They issued an urgent appeal to the international community to act decisively to protect civilians and uphold international law.

New Zealand first introduced travel bans targeting settlers in February 2024 and has since deepened its alignment with a widening coalition of Western partners taking coordinated action against individuals linked to settler violence and illegal settlement expansion.
