EU Weighs Action Against Israeli Officials After Flotilla Incident

(MENAFN) European Union member states are discussing the possibility of imposing sanctions on certain Israeli ministers over allegations that they encouraged or supported actions linked to human rights abuses, according to reports referencing a draft document prepared ahead of the bloc’s upcoming summit.

The proposal is expected to be reviewed during the EU leaders’ meeting scheduled for June 18-19. According to reports, the draft text includes criticism of the treatment of activists detained after Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla while it was traveling toward Gaza.

One section of the document reportedly states that the European Council "condemns the ill-treatment inflicted on detainees following the interception of the Global Sumud flotilla in international waters."

The draft further urges the EU Council "to continue its work on restrictive measures against extremist ministers who incite and promote such human rights violations."

Negotiations among representatives of the EU’s 27 member countries are still ongoing, meaning the language and recommendations contained in the document could be revised before the summit takes place.

The discussions come in the aftermath of Israel’s interception of the aid flotilla in international waters. Footage released by Israeli authorities and widely shared online showed detainees seated or kneeling in closely packed rows with their hands restrained using plastic zip ties while senior Israeli officials visited the area.

The images sparked criticism from human rights organizations and several governments, leading some European countries to push for a firmer response from the bloc.

According to reports, France and Italy have been among the countries advocating stronger measures, including consideration of sanctions.

EU leaders are expected to address the issue during their upcoming meeting as they seek to establish a coordinated position regarding recent developments in Gaza and broader regional tensions in the Middle East.
