Lebanese President Calls for Dialogue as Conflict Toll Continues to Rise

(MENAFN) Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has emphasized the need for negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict with Israel, saying dialogue remains the only viable path forward as Lebanon continues to endure heavy human and material losses.

Speaking during a meeting with representatives of professional syndicates, Aoun pointed to the severe consequences of the conflict, stating: "Lebanon has suffered more than 3,000 deaths, over one million displaced people, and thousands of destroyed homes, with no end to this situation in sight.”

He stressed the responsibility of state institutions to protect and support citizens affected by the violence, adding: “It is the duty of the state to care for its citizens and not to stand idly by. There is no other option but negotiation.”

The president also reaffirmed his government's commitment to maintaining domestic stability and preventing internal divisions. He warned against actions that could inflame tensions within the country, saying that “preventing strife that could threaten the country's survival, as anyone who fuels such discord is serving Israel's interests.”

Highlighting his position on resolving conflicts through diplomacy, Aoun stated: “Strength lies not in waging war, but in having the courage to end war through negotiations that serve the country's interests."

His comments came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to cease attacks against one another following indirect contacts conducted through mediators.

According to Trump, discussions were held with both sides through intermediaries, and assurances were received that “all shooting will stop.”

Despite those developments, reports indicate that Israeli military operations in Lebanon continued on Tuesday, even after a ceasefire that entered into force on April 17 and was later extended for an additional 45 days following indirect negotiations facilitated by the United States.

According to figures released by Lebanese health authorities, attacks carried out since March 2 have resulted in the deaths of more than 3,400 people, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian impact of the conflict.
