UN Warns of Ukraine War Spillover After Drone Incident in Romania

(MENAFN) The United Nations on Monday renewed its warnings about the risk of the Ukraine conflict spilling beyond its borders following a drone incident in Romania that injured civilians.

Addressing the UN Security Council, Kayoko Gotoh, Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division for the UN Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, said recent developments highlight the dangers of regional escalation.

“Last Friday, a dangerous incident crystallized our oft-stated warnings about the potential spillover of the war,” she said.

She explained that during the night of May 28–29, an armed drone reportedly struck and detonated on the upper floor of a 10-story residential building in the Romanian city of Galati, leaving a woman and a child injured.

The drone was identified by Romanian authorities as Russian, according to reports.

Gotoh noted that this was not the first reported case of airspace violations involving armed drones since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. She also pointed to what she described as a growing pattern of drone activity affecting airspace and territorial waters in countries bordering Ukraine and Russia.
