Colombia Takes Over UN Security Council Presidency for June
(MENAFN) Colombia on Monday officially assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of June, committing to place emphasis on peacebuilding efforts, the inclusion of women in peace processes, and stronger protection for children affected by armed conflict.
Speaking at a press conference outlining the Council’s agenda for the month, Colombia’s Ambassador to the UN, Leonor Zalabata, said the country’s approach would reflect its own historical experience with peacebuilding.
"Colombia will exercise the presidency of the Security Council on the basis of a premise that has deeply characterized our own history, and that is that peace is not a linear process; rather, it is one that is built collectively, gradually," she said.
Zalabata added that the presidency comes amid a difficult global environment marked by rising geopolitical tensions, multiple active conflicts, and worsening humanitarian crises, all intensified by climate change and increasing fragmentation within the international system.
She noted that these overlapping challenges will shape the Council’s work throughout the month.
