Schumer Calls for Limits on US Role in Iran Hostilities

(MENAFN) US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday that Democratic lawmakers will keep pressing for congressional action aimed at restricting US military involvement in the conflict with Iran.

Addressing the Senate, Schumer criticized President Donald Trump's approach to the crisis and argued that Congress must reassert its constitutional role in decisions concerning war and military engagement.

"Trump has proven over and over again that he's incapable of getting our country out of this mess. Congress needs to step up," Schumer said.

The Democratic senator from New York pointed to a bipartisan initiative launched before Memorial Day in which Democrats, joined by several Republican lawmakers, backed efforts to advance a war powers resolution.

Emphasizing that his party intends to maintain pressure on the issue, Schumer said Congress should continue considering measures designed to limit US participation in the conflict.

"We will not stop forcing votes to end this war until this disastrous war is over once and for all.

"Trump and his allies in the Senate may not see the urgency of ending this war, but Democrats and the American people do," Schumer said.
