Netanyahu Faces Backlash Over Halted Beirut Strike After Trump Pressure
(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced sharp criticism on Monday from both opposition figures and members of his governing coalition after reportedly abandoning plans for attacks on Beirut following pressure from US President Donald Trump.
Political opponents accused the government of allowing outside influence to dictate national security decisions. Opposition leader Yair Lapid voiced his disapproval, writing on the US social media platform X: "(Israel) is a country under complete guardianship."
Former Defense Minister and Yisrael Beiteinu leader Avigdor Lieberman also condemned the move, arguing that Netanyahu was no longer acting independently.
"Netanyahu is not a prime minister, but a puppet," he said in a statement cited by reports.
Criticism extended beyond the opposition. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said the current administration "has lost control over Israeli sovereignty," according to reports.
Meanwhile, coalition ally Itamar Ben-Gvir publicly called on Netanyahu to reject Washington’s pressure and maintain an independent course.
“It is time to tell our friend, President Trump - 'no',” Ben-Gvir said on his X account.
