Putin Calls for Evidence Sharing Over Romania Drone Incident

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for an “objective investigation” into a drone incident in Romania in which an apartment building was damaged and two people were injured near the Ukrainian border.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to Kazakhstan, Putin said Russia is prepared to review and share its assessment of the incident, provided that Romanian authorities supply either physical debris from the unmanned aerial vehicle or technical data related to its trajectory and origin.

The Romanian Defense Ministry had previously stated that the drone was of Russian origin, following the crash in the city of Galați. However, Russian officials dispute this assessment and argue that similar incidents in European countries have later been attributed to Ukrainian drones or air defense activity rather than direct Russian strikes.

Putin claimed that past cases in several European states were initially blamed on Russia but were later reassessed, suggesting that some incidents involved Ukrainian drones diverted by electronic warfare or technical malfunction. He urged Romania to provide “objective evidence” to support its conclusions.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan visited the crash site and suggested that the drone may have been affected by air defense activity connected to operations over Ukraine, with its trajectory potentially altered before crossing into Romanian territory. He stated that authorities are analyzing available tracking data and do not currently view the incident as a deliberate attack on Romania.

The episode comes amid a broader pattern of drone and missile incidents reported near NATO borders during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Previous similar incidents in the region have also led to disputed attribution between Russia and Ukraine, with investigations sometimes revising initial assessments.

The incident has renewed calls from Moscow for joint examination of recovered evidence and technical data in order to establish clearer conclusions about cross-border aerial incidents occurring near the conflict zone.
