US Strike Stops Vessel Heading Toward Iran
(MENAFN) A cargo vessel traveling toward Iran was struck by a US military aircraft in the Gulf of Oman as part of Washington's enforcement of maritime restrictions against Tehran, according to official statements.
Reports indicated that the Gambian-registered ship, M/V Lian Star, was repeatedly contacted by US forces on Friday but allegedly failed to respond to more than 20 warnings while continuing its course toward an Iranian harbor.
“A US aircraft disabled the vessel by firing a Hellfire missile into the ship’s engine room after Lian Star’s crew failed to comply. The ship is no longer transiting to Iran,” CENTCOM said on X on Saturday.
According to reports citing a US official, the vessel was left stranded at sea following the strike, and American personnel did not board the ship afterward.
The incident occurred near the Strait of Hormuz amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran. Diplomatic efforts aimed at easing the dispute reportedly failed to achieve progress, despite positive remarks from US officials in recent days.
Iran previously restricted passage through the strategic waterway for vessels belonging to what it described as hostile countries following joint US-Israeli airstrikes launched on February 28. The route is a crucial corridor for international energy supplies, carrying roughly a quarter of the world's seaborne oil trade and about one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas shipments. In response, the United States introduced its own maritime blockade targeting Iranian ports one week after a ceasefire agreement was reached in April.
As stated by reports, US forces have intercepted maritime traffic extensively since the blockade began, disabling five commercial ships and diverting 116 others from Iranian destinations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned that military action could resume if Iran refuses to accept conditions proposed by Washington. Iranian authorities have dismissed those demands, describing them as unacceptable.
“The Army of the Islamic Republic stands firmly and resolutely against any hostile move by the enemy,” Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, the deputy commander of the Iranian Army for coordination, said on Saturday, as cited by Press TV.
