Putin, Pashinyan Hold Talks on Future of Armenia’s EAEU Membership
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held discussions on Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to the Kremlin on Monday.
According to reports, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists in Moscow that the topic was addressed during a phone call earlier in the day, covering various aspects of Armenia’s position within the bloc.
He noted that the talks also referenced a recent statement by other EAEU member states suggesting that Armenia consider holding a referendum on whether its future alignment should be with the European Union or the EAEU.
“They discussed it as a whole. A discussion took place in continuation of the agenda that was on the Supreme Council, which took place in Astana,” he said, referring to a recent summit of EAEU leaders in Kazakhstan.
According to reports, Peskov added that a joint statement from the summit outlines that all details regarding Armenia’s membership are expected to be finalized by December.
When asked about separate claims involving Lithuania and alleged use of its airspace in the Ukraine conflict, Peskov said such matters should be evaluated by military authorities.
