German Minister Cancels Beirut Visit Amid Israeli Escalation

(MENAFN) A planned trip to Lebanon by German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan was called off on Monday after her aircraft was unable to proceed with its landing in Beirut due to escalating security concerns linked to the latest Israeli military operations, according to reports.

According to reports, the decision was taken while the aircraft was approaching the Lebanese capital as authorities monitored the rapidly changing situation on the ground.

“The trip to Beirut had to be canceled during the (plane’s) approach. This decision was made for military reasons based on an ongoing assessment of developments in the rapidly deteriorating situation in Beirut,” private broadcaster n-tv cited the Ministry of Development as saying in Berlin.

Reports indicated that the government aircraft was redirected to Larnaca in Cyprus on Monday afternoon. From there, plans were made for the delegation to return to Berlin. Officials reportedly concluded that conditions in Lebanon had worsened significantly, making the visit impossible to continue.

According to reports, the security environment in Lebanon has become increasingly unstable as Israeli ground troops push further into the country and expectations grow that additional military operations could target areas around Beirut.

The situation intensified after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans for attacks in the southern suburbs of Beirut, prompting residents in the affected areas to leave their homes in anticipation of possible strikes.

According to reports, the cancellation reflects growing international concern over the escalating conflict and the heightened risks facing diplomatic and official travel to Lebanon.
