Philippines, Vietnam Elevate Strategic Ties, Expand Maritime Cooperation
(MENAFN) The Philippines and Vietnam agreed on Monday to strengthen cooperation in political, security, and maritime affairs while upgrading their existing strategic relationship to an enhanced strategic partnership.
According to reports, the decision was finalized during discussions in Manila between Vietnamese President To Lam and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
To Lam, who also serves as general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, arrived in the Philippine capital on Sunday for his first state visit to the country.
The visit coincided with two key milestones in bilateral relations: the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 10th year since the establishment of the strategic partnership between the two nations.
According to a joint statement, both governments agreed to broaden cooperation in maritime matters by strengthening existing mechanisms and advancing the implementation of the "understanding on incident prevention and management" in the disputed South China Sea.
The agreement also includes closer coordination between the coast guard agencies of both countries.
The two sides further pledged to address maritime disputes and incidents through peaceful dialogue and friendly engagement, emphasizing adherence to international law as the basis for managing issues at sea.
