China Pledges Emergency Health Support to Congo as Ebola Outbreak Spreads
(MENAFN) China announced on Monday that it will provide urgent humanitarian and medical assistance to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak affecting parts of Central and East Africa.
Speaking in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the “Chinese government has decided to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the DRC and in particular send medical expert teams for medical services and assistance.”
“We feel for the DRC over the latest outbreak of the Ebola,” said Lin.
According to reports, China is also extending support to regional health institutions, including the African Union Commission and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, as part of broader efforts to help contain the spread of the disease.
Reports released by international health authorities on Friday indicated that the current outbreak in Congo and Uganda has resulted in at least 134 confirmed infections. The death toll among confirmed cases in the two countries has reached 18.
According to reports, health officials in Congo continue to identify new suspected infections.
Since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, more than 1,000 suspected cases have been recorded.
The outbreak is primarily linked to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has been concentrated in three eastern provinces of the DRC: Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, according to reports.
