Macron Denounces Unrest During PSG Champions League Celebration Scenes
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has sharply condemned violent incidents that broke out during celebrations marking Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League win over Arsenal, calling the scenes across France “unacceptable.”
During a reception for PSG players at the Élysée Palace on Sunday, following the club’s second consecutive European title, Macron said the disturbances in Paris and other cities had overshadowed what should have been a moment of national celebration.
He stated that “unfortunately, we witnessed unacceptable scenes of violence in Paris and other cities for much of last night.”
He added, “That is not football. That is not sport. That is not what we love,” while promising that authorities would take a strict stance against those involved.
“We do not want to see this anymore. Enough is enough. It's over,” he said.
Macron also expressed gratitude to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, Paris Police Chief Patrice Faure, and security forces for their handling of the situation.
Tensions persisted into Sunday as celebrations continued in the capital. According to a media outlet, clashes erupted between police and supporters near the Champ-de-Mars area during a victory parade for PSG, with police deploying pepper spray to disperse crowds.
