Kerkhove is currently a Research Fellow at the University of Queensland's School of Social Sciences, working on the ARC-funded project 'Diving in the Desert', which examines Mithaka ethnohistory and historical records of floods and droughts in the Channel Country (Queensland)

Published 13 books, 40 peer-reviewed academic articles and book chapters, 5 book reviews, 90 heritage reports, 4 commemorative booklets, 11 online essays.
