Vietnamese President Begins First Visit to Philippines
(MENAFN) Vietnamese President To Lam began his two-day inaugural trip to the Philippines on Sunday, with the purpose of enhancing collaboration between the two nations, according to state media.
Accompanied by his spouse Ngo Phuong Ly, To Lam landed in Manila aboard a Vietnam Airlines flight. He was greeted by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., as reported by a news agency.
This occasion represents the first time a leader of the Vietnamese Communist Party has visited the Philippines.
On Monday, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is scheduled to officially receive To Lam. The two leaders will then engage in bilateral discussions centered on expanding cooperation in areas such as commerce and investment, food supply security, defense and maritime collaboration, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
Vietnam continues to be the Philippines’ sole strategic ally in Southeast Asia, as well as one of its most significant economic and security partners in the region.
The visit follows an agreement reached only weeks earlier between Marcos and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung during an ASEAN summit. The two leaders committed to establishing a long-term rice trade framework.
Vietnam is among the Philippines’ largest rice exporters and plays a vital role in stabilizing the country’s domestic rice availability and pricing.
