UN Warns of Escalation in Southern Lebanon as Violence, Displacement Rise
(MENAFN) The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has voiced serious concern over the worsening security situation in southern Lebanon, pointing to a sharp rise in violence that has resulted in widespread displacement, casualties, and destruction, according to official statements reported by international agencies.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said the ongoing hostilities are further destabilizing the region, with civilians continuing to suffer the most severe consequences. The mission noted that “hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes, often at very short notice.”
It also reported extensive damage to residential areas, roads, and essential infrastructure, warning that such destruction is severely disrupting daily life and recovery efforts in affected communities.
UNIFIL additionally stated that 670 projectiles were launched on Wednesday, describing it as the highest level recorded since 17 April, though it did not specify responsibility for the launches. The mission said it is continuing its engagement with relevant parties in an effort to reduce tensions and reinforce obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
On the ground, the humanitarian toll has continued to rise. According to reports citing Lebanese authorities, Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least 15 people on Thursday, including children, despite a ceasefire arrangement.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah said it conducted dozens of operations against Israeli military positions in both southern Lebanon and northern Israel over the previous 24 hours. The group stated that these actions were carried out in response to ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement.
Since early March, Israel has intensified its military operations in Lebanon, resulting in thousands of deaths, large numbers of injuries, and the displacement of over a million people, according to official figures cited in reports.
Despite a US-mediated ceasefire that came into effect in mid-April and was later extended, Israeli forces have reportedly continued daily strikes, contributing to sustained instability in the region.
