Clashes Erupt Outside New Jersey Immigration Detention Center

(MENAFN) Tensions escalated in New Jersey, United States, as confrontations broke out between demonstrators and police outside the Delaney Hall federal immigration detention facility, according to reports. The unrest followed ongoing protests that intensified from Friday into Saturday, involving both anti-immigration enforcement activists and law enforcement officers in riot gear.

Authorities erected additional barriers around the Newark facility ahead of planned rival demonstrations by supporters and opponents of federal immigration enforcement policies.

The protests have been ongoing for over a week, driven by allegations regarding conditions inside the detention center, according to reports.

Opposing rallies were organized over the weekend, with pro-enforcement groups staging a demonstration while counterprotesters gathered nearby. Some state and local Democratic officials also joined the protests, echoing claims that detainees were being denied adequate food and medical care—allegations that have been rejected by federal authorities.

According to reports, earlier demonstrations saw repeated confrontations between protesters and immigration officers, with pepper spray deployed to disperse crowds. On Friday night, state police in riot gear clashed with protesters wearing protective gear such as gas masks and goggles, and at least three individuals were taken into custody.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill said state police intervention became necessary after she had previously urged both sides to ease tensions, stating it was important to "lower the temperature now."
