Netanyahu Set to Convene Emergency Security Meeting

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an urgent security meeting Saturday with top defense officials to evaluate a rapidly deteriorating situation along the northern front, following a dramatic escalation in Hezbollah rocket fire that caught the Israeli military off guard.

An Israeli news channel reported that Netanyahu summoned Defense Minister Israel Katz, army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, and northern commanders for an emergency assessment after "the Israeli army was surprised by the scale of the rocket fire and Hezbollah's decision to change its fire policy in response to the expansion of the Israeli army's ground operations in southern Lebanon."

The network reported that "dozens of rockets were fired from Lebanon toward the north on Saturday, and for the first time since the ceasefire began (on April 17), these rockets reached the cities of Safed and Nahariya" — marking a significant escalation in Hezbollah's reach into Israeli territory.

The situation has descended into what the channel described as "utter chaos and an uncontrollable situation (in the north)," while pointedly noting that "the government is not concerned about this."

An Israeli radio station reported Saturday that sirens have sounded 1,099 times across northern Israel since the fragile ceasefire took effect on April 17 — underscoring the relentless pace of hostilities despite the truce.

Hezbollah claimed drone strikes targeting Israeli soldiers near the Natua settlement and the Galilee Forest military camp. The group's growing drone campaign has alarmed Israeli officials, with Netanyahu himself labeling the unmanned aircraft a "major threat" due to the difficulty in detecting them.

Israel has pressed on with its military operations in Lebanon despite a ceasefire extended for 45 days from May 17, following indirect US-mediated talks. Since March 2, Israeli strikes have killed more than 3,371 people in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
