Colombia Holds Presidential Election to Choose Leader for 2026–2030 Term
(MENAFN) Colombian voters are set to choose the country's next president on Sunday, with the winner expected to lead the nation during the 2026–2030 term.
While 14 candidates are participating in the first round of voting, the contest is largely focused on three prominent figures: Ivan Cepeda of the ruling Pacto Historico, independent candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, and Paloma Valencia, who is supported by former President Alvaro Uribe.
Currently serving as a senator, Cepeda is widely regarded as the political heir to President Gustavo Petro and has maintained a lead in national opinion surveys.
He is the son of Manuel Cepeda Vargas, a communist politician who was killed by paramilitary groups in 1994.
After spending parts of his life outside Colombia due to threats against his family, Cepeda went on to adopt a reform-oriented socialist platform focused on institutional change and social justice.
If elected, he has pledged to continue the reform agenda launched by Petro's administration, including measures aimed at reducing inequality, tackling corruption, advancing institutional reforms, and promoting peace through dialogue and negotiations.
