Israeli Strike Hits Beirut Outskirts As Fighting Escalates

BEIRUT, May 28 (dpa) -- The Israeli military said it carried out a strike in Beirut on Thursday despite an active ceasefire, describing the operation as“targeted” without initially providing further details.

While exchanges of fire between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon have intensified again in recent weeks, Beirut had seen only one strike since a truce officially took effect in mid-April.

According to the Israeli military, that earlier strike around three weeks ago targeted a commander from Hezbollah's elite Radwan Unit.

Initial Lebanese reports said the latest strike hit a residential building in the Choueifat district on the outskirts of the capital. dpa reporters said drones had been audible over large parts of Beirut since the morning hours.

There were initially no reports of possible casualties.

The ceasefire was agreed between the Israeli and Lebanese governments, although Lebanon itself is not a direct party to the conflict. Hezbollah has rejected negotiations with Israel.

In practice, however, the war has never fully come to a halt, with both sides continuing to carry out attacks. Lebanon in particular has repeatedly seen fatalities.
