Trump Delays AI Regulation Plan Citing Innovation, China Competition Concerns

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has postponed signing an executive order aimed at increasing federal oversight of artificial intelligence systems, with officials and reports indicating the decision was influenced by concerns over maintaining US competitiveness in the global AI race, according to reports.

Initial details of the proposed policy emerged earlier this month, suggesting that the administration was considering a framework that would require developers of advanced AI systems to engage with US authorities before releasing new models. The plan was described as a voluntary consultation mechanism intended to help anticipate risks such as AI-enabled cyber threats and to provide government agencies, including defense institutions, with early insight into emerging technologies.

Speaking during a public event, Trump said he decided to delay the order because certain provisions could hinder technological progress. He argued that the United States is currently leading global AI development and emphasized that policy should not interfere with that advantage.

He also described artificial intelligence as a major driver of economic expansion and job creation, while indicating that discussions on AI safety and governance had also been held with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a recent visit, reflecting broader geopolitical competition in the sector.

However, some media outlets reported that the postponement followed lobbying efforts from major figures in the technology industry, including executives from leading AI and social media companies as well as former advisers involved in technology policy. These reports suggested that industry leaders were concerned the proposed rules could slow product deployment or introduce compliance burdens tied to security evaluations.

One prominent tech entrepreneur publicly rejected claims of involvement in influencing the decision, stating that the allegations were inaccurate and that he had not been consulted on the contents of the draft order, adding that his communication with the president occurred only after the decision to postpone had already been made.
