India-Africa Forum Summit Delayed Over Ebola Health Concerns
(MENAFN) The African Union and India have jointly decided to postpone the upcoming India-Africa Forum Summit, citing concerns over the ongoing Ebola outbreak affecting parts of Africa, according to reports.
The summit, originally scheduled to take place in New Delhi from May 28 to May 31, was delayed after both sides reviewed the evolving public health situation. In a joint statement, the two parties said they had discussed the “evolving health situation” in affected regions and agreed that it would be “advisable” to hold the gathering at a later date.
Officials added that new dates will be determined through further consultations and announced once finalized.
India expressed solidarity with African nations and stated its readiness to support efforts led by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in addressing the outbreak, emphasizing cooperation aligned with an Africa-led response.
The forum, established in 2008, serves as a major platform for diplomatic and economic engagement between India and African countries, focusing on trade, development, technology, security cooperation, and broader South-South collaboration. The summit was expected to be held this year after a long gap, with previous editions taking place in 2011 and 2015.
The postponement comes amid heightened global concern over the Ebola outbreak in eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and parts of Uganda. Health authorities have reported hundreds of suspected cases and more than 160 suspected fatalities, with infections concentrated in conflict-affected areas such as Ituri and North Kivu, and additional spread reported in South Kivu.
International health bodies have responded by deploying emergency teams to affected regions after declaring the situation a public health emergency, citing the risk of further cross-border transmission and the complexity of containing the outbreak in areas experiencing armed conflict.
