Trump Envoy Calls for Expanded US Presence in Greenland
(MENAFN) According to reports, Jeff Landry said the United States should restore and expand its presence in Greenland as the administration of Donald Trump seeks to strengthen American military and strategic influence in the Arctic.
Landry, who also serves as governor of Louisiana, arrived in Nuuk on Sunday after being tasked by Trump to “find a lot of new friends.”
According to reports, the visit came after months of political tension triggered by Trump’s statements advocating greater American control over the Danish autonomous territory. The trip also reportedly generated controversy because Greenlandic authorities had not formally invited Landry.
“I think it’s time for the US to put its footprint back on Greenland,” he said during remarks to reporters, adding that Washington is considering expanding military activity and reopening former bases on the island.
During the Cold War, the United States operated 17 military installations across Greenland, though most were later closed. The Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland currently remains the only active American military facility on the island.
According to reports, US officials are discussing plans with Denmark that could involve establishing three additional military bases in southern Greenland.
“I think you’re seeing the president talk about increasing national security operations and repopulating certain bases in Greenland,” Landry reportedly stated.
Under a defense agreement signed with Denmark in 1951 and later updated in 2004, the United States already has permission to expand troop deployments and military infrastructure in Greenland as long as Danish and Greenlandic authorities receive prior notification.
