Deadly Blast Targets Train in Pakistan’s Balochistan Region

(MENAFN) According to reports, at least 28 people were killed and around 90 others injured after a suspected suicide attack targeted a passenger train in southwestern Pakistan.

The explosion occurred in Balochistan near the city of Quetta, when an attacker reportedly rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a train carrying military personnel as it approached a cantonment area.

Police and medical sources said the death toll rose after several of the wounded later died in hospital, with multiple victims reported to be in critical condition.

According to reports, the blast was powerful enough to be heard from several kilometers away and caused extensive damage not only to the train but also to nearby homes and vehicles along the railway line.

The banned militant group Balochistan Liberation Army reportedly claimed responsibility, stating that a suicide bomber had targeted military personnel.

Following the explosion, heavy gunfire was also reported in the area, while emergency services were deployed and hospitals in Quetta were placed on high alert to handle mass casualties.

Officials, including provincial home department representative Babar Yousafzai, said security forces and rescue teams quickly reached the site as investigations began into the nature of the attack.

Balochistan, a resource-rich region and a key corridor for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, has long faced insurgent violence linked to separatist and militant groups.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, stating that such acts of violence would not undermine national resolve.
