Former PM Attal Announces Bid for France Presidency

(MENAFN) Former French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced Friday that he plans to run for president next year following the end of Emmanuel Macron’s term, becoming another centrist contender seeking to challenge the growing influence of the far right in France.

Speaking in the southern village of Mur-de-Barrez, Attal criticized what he described as a political climate focused on decline rather than ambition for the country’s future.

"I can't take this kind of French politics anymore, where it's just 50 shades of managing decline," said the 37-year-old, who was France's youngest prime minister when he served in 2024.

The announcement was made in a rural region where centrist politicians hope to expand support in areas increasingly targeted by the far-right National Rally (RN) party.

Attal now joins an expanding presidential field that already includes former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and left-wing figure Jean-Luc Melenchon.

The National Rally is also preparing for what many view as its strongest opportunity yet to gain power, with either Marine Le Pen or Jordan Bardella expected to represent the party in the election.

Attal, who is openly gay and educated at elite French institutions, became the country’s youngest-ever prime minister at age 34, drawing frequent comparisons to Macron because of his rapid political rise.

Like Macron, who entered the presidency at 39 in 2017, Attal represents a younger generation of French centrist politicians. He is set to turn 38 shortly before the presidential election scheduled for April next year.
