(MENAFN) Voting started on Sunday in several districts across northeastern and northern Syria to select members of the People’s Assembly, according to the Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections.

Polling was opened in Hasakah and Qamishli in Hasakah province, as well as in Ain al-Arab district of Aleppo province, as reported by news agency, citing the electoral committee.

The committee said that competition varies by district, with 12 candidates contesting two seats in Ain al-Arab from a 100-member electoral body. In Hasakah, 13 candidates are running for three seats, with 150 eligible electors participating.

In Qamishli, seven candidates are competing for four parliamentary seats within a voting body of 198 members.

According to the news agency, some seats in Hasakah’s al-Malikiyah district were already filled without opposition after only two candidates registered.

Voting is expected to continue until midday, with the possibility of a one-hour extension if turnout requirements are not met.
