Heavy Rains Hit Southwest China, Leaving One Dead, Seventeen Missing
(MENAFN) At least one person has been killed and 17 others remain missing after torrential rains struck southwest China’s Yongchuan district, according to reports from state media.
Heavy rainfall began late Saturday and continued through midday Sunday, dumping extreme precipitation across the region. Guankouwan and Hanjiagou villages recorded 296.7 millimeters (11.6 inches) and 256.9 millimeters of rain respectively, indicating severe storm conditions.
Meteorological authorities warned that the short gap between successive rain events has significantly increased the risk of geological disasters, including landslides, ground collapses, and debris flows, according to reports.
Local authorities activated a Level-III emergency response for geological disasters in Yongchuan district, while rescue teams were deployed to search for the missing and assess damage in affected areas.
Emergency operations are ongoing as officials work to locate survivors and stabilize high-risk zones impacted by the flooding.
